I’m Nate, beginning in June 2016 I will be serving in the Peace Corps in youth development for two years in Swaziland, Africa.

Throughout my teenage years I did various mission trips, building houses in Tijuana and Tecate, Mexico several times as well as assisting in the rebuilding process of houses after Hurricane Katrina in Mississippi and Louisiana.  This work made me have an appreciation for serving in under-served communities, eventually leading me to getting my degree in urban planning from the University of Cincinnati.

After graduating and getting a full time job for a housing developer I realized I was not meant for that field.  I was meant to do something different, and special education practically fell into my lap.  I began working at a junior high school in Cincinnati as an intervention specialist aide while also pursuing a Masters in Special Education. Working with children in my school proved to be the most rewarding experience I have had to date and I realized that I was a natural working with children with special needs.

I have put a hold on my education and my pursuit to become a special education teacher to serve in the Peace Corps.  The Peace Corps is something I have wanted to do since I first began doing mission trips twelve years ago. After graduating from UC, I gave up on the thought of doing the PC and it wasn’t until I began working in education that I realized I had the chance of a lifetime to do what I have wanted.  While my PC experience it is going to be a major life change that will impact every part of my life I am certain it will make me a better teacher and person.
